Seasonal Success for Lake Erie Walleye Fishing
The seasonal migration habits of Lake Erie Walleye in the western basin to the central basin of Lake Erie are pretty consistent. Large numbers of 2-6 lb. Walleye are caught regularly in the spring from Port Clinton to Marblehead. In summer the larger fish move into the cooler deeper waters that harbor more baitfish in Lake Eries central basin from Cleveland to Ashtabula, Oh. Trophy Walleye from 9-11 lbs. are fairly common.
Trolling is the preferred method of catching large numbers of Lake Erie walleye. Planer boards are essential to set multiple lines out each side. Jet divers and Dipsy divers rigged with Stinger spoons and worm harnesses are excellent choices. Good Lake Erie walleye fishing continues into September and October when the big walleye migrate back to the west off of Huron and Vermilion.
In the spring action really heats up when the water temperature reaches the 50's smaller spoons and slow wobbling crank baits work well. As it warms to the 70's July-August is when they head for the deeper water 70 - 80 ft. typically suspended from 50 - 60 ft. preferring the cooler water just above the thermocline. This is where an abundance bait fish will keep the walleyes interest during this time.
50 Jets and large dipsy's are the prefered diving devices for most Lake Erie charter captains. Large crank baits like the Storm Thunderstick and Long-A Bombers rigged with wire line work well this time of year also for Lake Erie Walleye. Steelhead trout show up in good numbers this time of year so keep those drags loose they will eat the same lures as the walleye.
As the water cools again in the fall the large schools move west from Sandusky to the Vermilion sand bar from mid September to early November . Lots of Lake Erie fishing charters will be working this area for trophy Lake Erie Walleye typically fishing 20 - 30 ft. down in 35 - 50 ft. of water with the same techniques mentioned in the other seasons.
